FPT Industrial celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity



Furthering its strategic focus on environmental issues, FPT Industrial celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2014 by outlining its environmental and sustainability projects.

A segment of CNH Industrial, which has topped both the world and European Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for the last three consecutive years, FPT Industrial has developed a Sustainability Plan that aims to safeguard and improve the biodiversity in areas around its production sites in Bourbon Lancy, France, and Foggia, Italy.

In association with the new Sustainability Plan, FPT Industrial has adopted the Biodiversity Value Index (BVI), which has been developed jointly by CNH Industrial, the Fiat Group and the Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology of the University of Turin. The BVI is compatible with international methodologies; this allows the company to further focus its planning and control activities at safeguarding biodiversity.

The new BVI methodology has been applied to FPT Industrial facilities in Bourbon Lancy. Located inside an area of cultivation and pastures with limited industrialization, Bourbon Lancy is an area of high biodiversity with many protected plant and animal species, particularly as it is close to three protected areas along the Loire River.

In order to protect such biodiversity, FPT Industrial has planted native species and continued activities to prevent invasive species. It’s also created a route within the park focused on its wildlife, with photographic panels highlighting different flora and fauna of interest.

In contrast, the Foggia plant is located in an industrial and agricultural area called ‘Incoronata’. However, within the vicinity of the plant there is the 100 km² protected area of Valle del Cervaro and Bosco dell’Incoronata. During 2014, within this area the Anthropic Pressure Index (API) will be conducted to measure the environmental impact of the plant, surrounding factories, farming activities, urban centers and infrastructures.

In addition, the Biodiversity Index (BI) will take into consideration biological indicators in both aquatic and land ecosystems as well as an evaluation of internationally recognized protected species.

The combination of both the API and BI contribute towards measurement on the Biodiversity Value Index, which will classify the site from a biodiversity point of view. Following this, an improvement action plan will be identified and implemented.
